Never open the wrong bottle of wine with the Dacor WineStation

Wine requires a commitment, but it is not pricey bottles or expensive wine cellars that comprise the whole equation. Luckily, the other side of the equation is the good side: actually drinking the wine. However, that brings up another consideration: which bottle to open and drink? Or one could take the safe route and cover all the bases by opening more than one.

The Dacor Discovery DYWS4 WineStation allows for opened bottles of wine to be stored and preserved for up to 60 days. The home wine-serving station uses argon gas to stop oxygenation and allow opened wine bottles to be tapped and always available with a press of a button (and a glass). The unit measures about 20 inches across, stands less than 30 inches tall, and has a depth of 16 inches. It can be used in a standalone countertop configuration or it could be installed as a built-in. (So yes, some commitment required; not to mention its approximately $5K price tag.)

Regardless of where the wine appliance resides, the dispensing system is designed to mimic restaurant-quality machines. A programmable display offers users the ability to show wine type, year, and varietal, while the thermoelectric cooling system keeps bottles chilled to 30 degrees below room temperature. As seen above with the decision to build in or not, it is not entirely a commitment-free operation when up and running -- you still have to decide which one to drink.

Coffee might not be essential to life (although the jury is still out on that one), but it does show up every day of the week. The ubiquitous brown beverage that supplies a caffeinated jolt to imbibers can be enjoyed seemingly in a million different ways. However, before the cream and the sugar quandary comes up, how to brew it must first be addressed.

The Hamilton Beach (Model 49983) Two-Way Deluxe Coffeemaker ($99.99; available in August) is actually even more versatile than the name would imply. While true that the coffeemaker is designed to brew into either a travel mug or a full-sized carafe, it varies the possibilities by extending the capabilities on the to-go side of the appliance; either ground coffee or K-cups can be used to brew a single serving.

When the weekend finally rolls around and things slow down, the countertop appliance converts to a full 12-cup coffeemaker with nothing more than a turn of the dial. Understanding that timing is everything, the single cup side can deliver a brew in as few as 2.5 minutes, while the carafe side is programmable for up to 24 hours in advance and has an auto-shut-off feature just in case the snooze button wins a few times.

BBQ Dragon can light a grill fire in 10 minutes or less

Sadly, I find it easier to build a computer than a kick off a successful grill fire. The up-and-coming BBQ Dragon could be the breath of fresh air -- literally -- to change my poor fire-starting fortune.

Essentially working the same way as a fan, the cordless BBQ Dragon shoots a large amount of cool air into a fire and accelerates the burning process. The stainless steel device, which has a variable air speed controller and flexible arm, easily clips onto the side of a grill or smoker. The designers say the Dragon works great with bonfires, the Big Green Egg, wood stoves, and more.

Supermarkets are labyrinthine behemoths laid out in a convenient linear fashion. So where's the maze? On the supermarket shelves, of course. Food products galore stare back at us, silently appealing to our penchants for sugar, salt, and fat. We pick and choose, knowing full well what we are getting into. But it's the hidden components that are increasingly becoming a salient issue.

If supermarket shelves are overwhelming due to the sheer diversity of items, imagine the corporate structure behind the packaging. Or don't; just let your phone do it. Scan any bar code (UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN8, EAN13...) with your phone and the free Buycott app (for iOS; a previously available Android version is now "Coming soon") will display the product's corporate family tree on the screen. The app takes knowing where your food comes from further, telling you not only what brand belongs to what company, but what that company does with your dollars.

Pulling back the curtain on corporate activity should be an easy process. For example, GMO labeling is an important issue that many aren't even aware of. (Check out Prop 37 for an introduction to both sides of the debate.)

Currently, the government doesn't require that any GMO information be passed on to the consumer. Big food corporations want it to stay that way. Monsanto, for example, spends millions of dollars to keep GMO information off of packaging. How much? Buycott will tell you.

Importantly, and promisingly, users can join campaigns (both for and against) issues that they care about. The app keeps track of user input, making it easy to shop for products that don't conflict with your beliefs. And this is what it is all about: knowing where your food comes from and where the dollars that buy it go.

If initial reaction is any gauge then it would appear this is something that consumers have been waiting for. There have been some negative user reviews as Buycott has been struggling to deal with the traffic. However, it's worth keeping an eye on, just like your grocery basket.

App-controlled robot bartender debuts at Google I/O

Now this is better than anything even the Jetsons had.

It won't console you as you drown your sorrows in alcohol, but MIT's Makr Shakr robotic bartender can make exactly the drink you're looking for before you've even arrived at the bar.

MIT's Senseable City Lab teamed up with Coca-Cola and Bacardi Rum to bring Makr Shakr to Google I/O, which starts Wednesday in San Francisco. The system allows barflies and frazzled developers alike to personalize their cocktail recipe of choice via a smartphone app, or to choose a libation created by another user, creating a crowdsourced drink menu.

"The system explores the new dynamics of social creation and consumption -- 'design, make, and enjoy' -- allowing users to design their own cocktail creations, while digitally controlled machines transform these designs into reality," Carlo Ratti, director of the MIT Senseable City Lab, said in an e-mail.

Once an order is placed via the app, three robotic arms serve up the drink using movements that mimic the real-world action of an uber-graceful bartender -- Makr Shakr's movements are modeled on the gestures of Italian dancer Roberto Bolle, along with director and choreographer Marco Pelle.

The inside of the refrigerator is no place for fast food. Aside from the fridge gnome who turns the light on and off when the door is opened and closed, it is pretty slow in there. Of course, this is exactly how we want it; it's nice to be able to look inside and find the dairy and the lunch meat where you left it (not counting housemate intervention). Zoku, of quick-pop-maker fame, understands that sometimes it's OK to slow down.

The Zoku Mini Pop Molds ($16.99) are part of Zoku's "Slow Pops" line. (The others are Round Pop Molds and Classic Pop Molds.) Picking up where traditional molds let off, the small contraption (it measures 9.75 inches by 6.75 inches and stands a squat 3 inches tall) is composed of a base and comes with fitted "sticks," complete with drip guards. What sets it apart is what hides underneath.

Each of the nine molds cradles frozen pops with flexible silicone. When it's time to eat one, the silicone inverts as the frozen treat is extracted. Unlike old-fashioned molds, there is no need to hold the base under running water. The result is homemade frozen treats that don't require any wrestling with equipment to enjoy -- although you will have to wait as they freeze.

Archos ChefPad tablet: Now you're cooking with Android

My poor iPad has survived flour, oil, lemon juice, and countless other kitchen mishaps. Maybe it's time I look a little more seriously at a dedicated kitchen computer. My options have just expanded with the arrival of the Archos ChefPad, an Android tablet built to handle the rigors of the cooking life.

The ChefPad is a full-blown 10-inch Android tablet running Jelly Bean with a 1.6GHz processor and 1GB of RAM behind it. There are the usual front and back cameras, in case you want to launch your own online cooking show. What makes it kitchen-specific are the preloaded cooking apps and easy-to-clean case.

The silicone case adds a layer of protection from flying butter and splashes of scrambled eggs. What's a little more unique is a selection of vetted cooking apps called Chef App. It filters through all the top options available from Google Play and delivers them in one spot. Think of it as a launchpad for all your recipes, tools, drink concoctions, how-to videos, and shopping apps.

Typical of Archos products, the price point isn't too much of a deterrent, coming in at $209.99. The ChefPad will be available starting in June. Despite the kitchen customizations, it still operates like a regular tablet, so you can slip it out of its case and play games or surf the Web like normal.

I generally like the idea of having a kitchen-specific tablet that you don't have to worry too much about coddling or keeping clean. I do think there is an opportunity here to create celebrity chef versions. I would love to see a Gordon Ramsey ChefPad that yells at you while you cook, or an Emeril Lagasse ChefPad that screams "Bam!" at random moments. That would certainly add an element of excitement to slaving away over a hot stove.

Dyson levels up in the U.S. with two new '2 Tier Radial' vacuums

The inside of a vacuum cleaner is no place to be. Luckily, most of us will never have to endure such a place. The detritus we create in daily living, however, is another story. Not only do we want dust, dirt, and pet hair to be subjected to the internal whirlwind of a vacuum cleaner, we want it to stay there. At least until it's time to empty the bin.

Emptying the bin may be the last step in the journey for particulate matter, but other side of the story is just beginning. The bagless technology that Dyson uses in its vacuum cleaners not only allows for simple disposal, but it also creates better suction by providing a constant, unimpeded airflow. Instead of being greeted with diminishing returns, users are given the opportunity to clean with no loss of suction power. And now, two new models offer refinements improving that efficiency.

As James Dyson puts it on the site, "2 Tier Radial cyclones are the latest development of our patented cyclone technology. By making the cyclones smaller, the air travels faster meaning we can extract more microscopic dust from the air."

The new Dyson DC47 Animal and DC50 Animal vacuums both feature the new "2 Tier Radial" cyclones. Additionally, the two new vacuum cleaners are both built around Dyson's ball technology, which allows for increased mobility while housing crucial components, including the motor.

Both units feature the new carbon fiber brush bar (previously only available on their handheld vacuums) that combines nylon bristles and antistatic carbon fiber filaments for efficient vacuuming of carpets and hardwood floors.

Both vacuums feature trigger-bin emptying systems, so when the time comes and the cleaning is done, cleaning up after the cleaning is as easy as pushing a button.

The DC47 Animal and the DC50 Animal are available in the United States starting today for $449 and $499, respectively.

Beer drone? Festival goers may see booze fall from the sky

Keep an eye on the sky the next time you're at a concert -- a cold beer might be coming your way. It's been announced that attendees of South Africa's OppiKoppi music festival will be able to order beer that comes delivered on an octocopter drone.

Called the OppiKoppi beer drone, the device is an 8-propeller helicopter that can be loaded with beer and flown over the festival, arriving at the GPS location of any person who orders a cold brew from a mobile app. Once the drone arrives at its location, it drops its cargo and a single beer attached to a parachute will make its way down to a designated campsite called District 9.

With beer intentionally flying in the air, there's some concern about a cold brew randomly hitting festival goers in the head. Darkwing Aerials, the South African company that's providing the beer drone for the festival, says it is taking safety precautions.

"There's going to be one campsite designated to the beer drop," Darkwing Aerials co-founder Dean Engela told CBSNews.com. "The campsite will be notified that there will be drones in the air."

The octocopter will only fly outside of the festival area while it makes its way to District 9 to deliver drinks. The drones are currently hand-guided, but the developers say they will eventually fly on a GPS grid. People inside the campsite will be told in advance that a drone will be flying above them during the show.

This is the first known case of a drone delivering beer to a festival audience, so there are plenty of kinks to be worked out. One concern is that the wrong person will get delivered a beer without paying for it. Engela says the beer will be provided for promotional purposes and will not cost any money, solving that problem for now.

The developers currently have one drone ready for the festival, but are working on perhaps providing two or three for the event. The beer drone currently carries one beer at a time, but Engela says they are working on prototypes that will carry two or three.

The OppiKoppi music festival takes place from Auguest 8 to August 10 at a farm in Northam, South Africa.

Sooner or later, every object in existence, including you and me, will be re-created out of Legos.

Fans of the bricks have limitless passion. But beyond creating cool dioramas, Lego modelers truly impress when they make functional tools.

Case in point: the Hippmikser 2000 by Flickr user Hippotam, whose real name is Marcin Danielak.

It looks like a hand mixer and works like one. Just insert the Lego beaters, press the button, and churn away. Check out the vid below.

The mixer is made from regular Lego pieces from sets, and has two Lego Technic Medium motors as well as a gear system. The power comes from a Lego train set battery box.

"I built the mixer for our local club contest as one of the biweekly challenges," Danielak, who lives in Krakow, Poland, told CNET. "This challenge was to build a simple mechanism, and I wanted to top other contestants by creating not only a Lego version of some object, but actually make it work like the real one.

"Because of the relatively low torque of the motors used, you can mix eggs or ingredients for pancakes but nothing more dense. It is possible to use more powerful motors though. Maybe a CNET reader will try that."

"It took only few evenings to design and build," Danielak added. "I usually build castles or houses not machinery, so most of the time I spend on figuring out how to pack the motors and gears into a relatively small space."

Kitchen showrooms are full of massive, shiny appliances meant to be strewn liberally about in a large kitchen. Most of the world, though, doesn't have that kind of space to spare for ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, kitchen islands, stovetops, and the like. The Clei Ecooking kitchen minds its manners and limits itself to a very compact space.

The Ecooking station is sleek, modern, and modular. It was created by Italian designer Massimo Facchinetti for Clei, a company specializing in transformable furniture. The company's creations are intended to make the most of small spaces like apartments and lofts.

Instead of spreading his kitchen design out, Facchinetti went up. The modular appliances stack like a bunch of really big Legos. The whole thing can be contained in a shiny rectangular tower, or you can pull out the parts you need when you want them. Need to chop some veggies? Slide out the cutting board. Want to wash that garlic off your fingers? Rotate the sink into place.

The Ecooking kitchen has pretty much everything you need, including a refrigerator, vertical garden, cooktop, and dishwasher.. It even has a solar panel to help power the electrical appliances. An internal water recycling system reuses water from the sink, filters it, and puts it into the dishwasher.

So far, there's no word on when Clei plans to make this unusual design available, but it sounds like the company is interested in putting it into production. It could end up being a nifty solution for people living in cramped quarters. You might just want to put it near a window to make the most of the solar capabilities.
